Wandering Wednesday | Boylan Heights / Warehouse District

Time to head to downtown Raleigh for our highlights of Boylan Heights and the Warehouse District! These two areas are bursting with character and have more to offer than we could possibly cover in a single post, but watch us try…. Our recent visit to The Dukes at City View has inspired us to shine a spotlight on some of our absolute favorites in this fantastic corner of DTR!

🕰️ History 🕰️

Let’s start by turning back the pages in time to check out what things looked like years ago.

  • 🏨 Boylan Heights: Montfort Hall, commissioned in 1858 by William Montfort Boylan, is one of the few remaining pre-Civil War houses in the Raleigh area. Today, it's known as Heights House {Hotel}, a national and Raleigh historic landmark. It's not just a place to stay; it's an experience, offering cocktails and hosting special events. Who wants to join us for tea?? [TOP photos]

  • Warehouse District: The Sidetrack at 130 S West Street once stood as Raleigh's first coffee house. Founded by NC State students, it was a vibrant Beatnik coffee house that frequently featured folk music performances. Just a block away from this historic spot, you can now savor a delightful cup of coffee or pastry at Heirloom. AND they just released a new dinner menu!! Go check it out. [BOTTOM photos]

✅ Things to do ✅

In these neighborhoods, there's no shortage of things to see and do. Our favorite spots:

  • Just down Boylan Avenue from Heights House, you'll discover Project Enlightenment, an early childhood program of Wake County Public Schools, providing invaluable resources for teachers and parents of young children.

  • Pop into Father & Son Antiques for fantastic mid-century modern furniture finds, thrifted clothes, and unique décor items. You can also visit Designed for Joy, one of our favorite local vendors known for beautiful jewelry, bags, and other handmade accessories. DFJ empowers women in crisis through employment and support!

  • Art enthusiasts, don't miss the CAM Raleigh, where you can explore fun and unique modern art exhibits. For a bit of train watching or a memorable "Raleigh" photo op, Raleigh Union Station is a must.

🍻 Where to Eat & Drink 🥙

When it comes to dining and sipping, Boylan Heights and the Warehouse District have you COVERED! Our recs:

  • Start your culinary journey at Wye Hill, offering the perfect blend of plates, pours, and skyline VIEWS.

  • If you're in need of a morning pick-me-up or crave local pastries, Rebus Works is a breakfast haven with an array of local treats. Or, swing by Boulted Bread for some of Raleigh's most beloved bread.

  • For those with a penchant for sushi, O-Ku is a must-visit destination. And if Eastern North Carolina-style hog is your comfort food, Sam Jones BBQ has you covered.
